Artist Statement

I know I am all of them even though they are contradictory.

Jess Broze processes her reactions to the world by making physical artwork. She translates abstract feelings into something material in order to ask questions about them, so people looking can maybe also question. Lately she’s been thinking about how the individual does not exist outside of community, community does not exist without individuals. How opposites create one another and only exist within a whole that mirrors their anti-parts. She has always had a need to create, to process the stuff out of her head into something tangible. She wants to describe the essence of a thing while also leaving it open so that it may become its own entity. She hopes that people looking at her work might also be able to find or create stories that connect to their lives, moods, or experiences.
